Stephen King was attacked by a shark while surfing at Angourie, on the north coast of the state of New South Wales, Australia on Sunday morning.
"Just as I was taking off, just jumping up, there was this bang from the side and I went cartwheeling through the air and then there was this thrashing beside me," King told Australian broadcaster Channel 9.
The station reported that the 51-year-old suffered only minor injuries for which he was given a tetanus shot.
"I'm probably the luckiest guy on two legs at the moment," he said. "Unbelievable."
A spokesman from Australia's Department of Primary Industries said attacks were more common at the start of summer.
"This is the time of year that a lot of the potentially dangerous sharks are in our coastal waters," Vic Peddermors said.
"We've got to be realistic. This is their territory and we're just the visitors."
It is the second shark attack in Australia this week. Sydney teenager Ronald Mason suffered minor injuries to his left leg in a similar incident involving a shark.
He was attacked while surfing off Maroubra Beach, in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
