SIBU: About 200 people were made homeless when their 22-door longhouse at Penyulau Road, about 10 km from Kanowit, was razed in a late morning fire yesterday.
Rumah Ungang Entebong was reduced to ashes in about an hour. The fire spread so fast that almost all residents ran out empty-handed.
Three cars parked in front of the community house were saved, but not four motorcycles and a sampan kept under the house, which residents had no time to take out.
Engulfed in flames were almost all personal belongings of the survivors, documents, cash and jewellery.
Putting up with relatives, the survivors hope disaster aid from the government would reach them fast as Christmas was just around the corner.
The longhouse chieftain said he and a few others were tending their pepper gardens when he saw thick smoke rising. They rushed home but the fire was already at its height.
No casualties were reported but loss in property was great, including a mini rice mill.
The 63-year-old chieftain said their rows of fruit trees at the back of the longhouse were also destroyed.
“It is fruiting season now, but there is no more income for our folks.”
Head of Kanowit Fire Brigade, Mohd Bujang said they received the emergency call at 12.04pm and arrived at the burning house at 12.28 pm with 24 firemen.
He said they prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby longhouse.
Firefighting was hampered by low water pressure, and they had to draw water from a river.
The fire was controlled in 20 minutes.
